ABSTRACT
The second law evaluation of a vapour compression
refrigeration system (VCRS) was carried out in this work. The objective of the
study was to determine the performance of the vapour compression refrigeration
system (VCRS) with different refrigerants. The major indicators considered were
exergy efficiency, total irreversibility, compressor work and cooling capacity.
The results indicates that refrigerant R290 has the highest exergy efficiency
(EE) of 53.51 percent followed by R134a andR507 with exergy efficiency of 53.35
percent and 51.97 percent respectively. The total irreversibility ratio (IR)
and cooling capacity (CP) occurred in the range between 18.90 JR 35.83 and
94.75 CP 231.81 with R290 having the highest values of irreversibility ratio
(IR) and cooling capacity (CP). Furthermore, the results show that as the
irreversibility rate of the system decreases, compressor work also increases
with increase in evaporator temperature. Finally R290, R507 and R134a gave 1.76
%, 1 0% and 0.76% efficiency per 10°C rise in evaporator temperature.
