ABSTRACT
The study focused on the
performance evaluation on the effects of greenhouse gas emission in electricity
generation at Alaoji Power Station Aba, Abia State. The specific objectives
ofthe study were to examine the effect ofMethane (CH4), carbon (ii) oxide (CO),
carbon (iv) oxide (CO2) and Nitrogen (iv) oxide (N2O) gas emission on
electricity generation performance in Alaoji Power Station. Annual data from
Alaoji Power Station from 2000-2017 was used in the study. The study applied a
linear regression modelling and ordinary least square technique (OLS). Ordinary
Least Square regression analysis ofthe study showed that there was a positive
relationship between CO2 emission and other gases that were captured in the
study such as CH4, CO. The study revealed that a unit increase in CO2 will lead
to 0.193802 unit increase in CH4, 7.519896 unit increase in CO2, and 2.861895
unit increase in NO2. This implied that as efforts is made to abate CO2
emissions in the atmosphere, strategies to remove other gases from the
atmosphere should be considered also. The study revealed that CO2 emission
increased from 296,508Gg in 2000 to 462,884Gg in 2017 against the energy that
rose from 37,253 in 2000 to 131,196 in 2017. The regression results should that
coefficient of determination R2 was very high 0.99 (99%). This suggests that the
regression results was adequate in describing the relationship ofthe parameters
under consideration. Based on the findings of the study, government should make
efforts to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030. This can be
achieved ifthe government ofNigeria can seek to increase its power generation
through a low-carbon path by making increased investments in clean, modern
energy and by harnessing its renewable energy resources such as solar, wind and
mini-hydro power.
