ABSTRACT
The repair and recommissioning ofthe
Bernoulli’s and Venturi meter apparatuses in-situ at the Fluid dynamics
laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering department in Michael Okpara
University ofAgriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) was done. The repair work was done
under the supervision and direction of an experienced Technician at the
laboratory. I'he repair work was initiated by troubleshooting the equipment
which revealed the faulty parts ofthe apparatuses. This was followed by the
procurement ofthe damaged parts and their reconstruction, polishing and
Assemblage. Electrical wiring was performed through the assistance ofan
electrician from the works Department of MOUAU. The parts included the Electric
motor, electric pump switches (1, 2,3 and 4), filter, glass tube, hose, clips,
plug and bolts. At the end ofthe repair, the process fluid mechanics
apparatuses became functional and were used to perform practical
experimentation to determine the rate offluid flow from one source or body to
another. Above all, the experimental steps (procedures) taken to achieve the
refurbishment and practical demonstrations of the fluid flow experiments such
as variations of the actual (Qa) with the theoretical (Qt) discharges, and flow
rate (Q) with the coefficient of discharge (Cd) were respectively provided and
performed. From the results obtained, increase in flow rate caused the
differential head to rise in the two limbs ofthe manometer that provided the
venture effect. Also, an average Cd value of0,97 was obtained which was close
to the actual Cd value of 0.98 with a very minimal percentage error of 0.1%.
Overall, the research work successfully contributed to knowledge by
demonstrating that it is practically possible to bring damaged apparatuses at
the fluid mechanics laboratories to be functional for practical demonstrations.
Consequently, technical understanding and know-how of how to repair and operate
these apparatuses were gotten from the refurbishment.
