ABSTRACT

 The purpose ofthis study is to examine the Human Resource Management practices and teacher’s performance in selected private secondary schools in Cross River State. A total of 353 teachers from three educational zones (consisting Calabar, Ikom and Ogoja) responded to the survey. The survey questionnaire had 48 items covering selected Human Resource Management practices and teacher’s performance. The study has found that Human Resource Management practices: in-service training; welfare scheme; promotion and performance appraisal have a significant relationship with teacher’s performance. Ifthe school is to increase on its performance to higher levels, it should emphasize more on in-service training, welfare scheme, promotion and performance appraisal. Some improvement needs to be done on performance appraisal and in-service training in order to increases teacher’s performance as well as school performance. This study has attempted to add to the body of knowledge on the effect of Human Resource Management practices on teacher’s performance. This study concludes that the effectiveness of implementing Human Resource Management practices in private secondary schools does indeed have a major impact toward the teacher’s and school performance.
