ABSTRACT
The antimicrobial property of coconut
oil was investigated. Mature coconut fruits were obtained from Umuahia main
market and tested against some food borne microorganisms. The antimicrobial
activity of coconut oil was compared against some common antibiotics (Amoxicill
in, Chioramphenicol, Ciprofloxacin and Fluconazole) used in the treatment of
various infections. The test organisms included; Staphylococcus aureus,
Escherichia co/i, and Candida albicans. The extract of the coconut oil yielded
zones of inhibition on the test organisms; in comparison with the antibiotic
controls. This study revealed that coconut oil can be used as an antimicrobial
agent against common human pathogens and can be incorporated in body creams and
lotions.
