Design and Implementation of a Voiced Based Email System for Visually Challenged:- Ikwuegbu, Augustine C

ABSTRACT

The digital era has redefined how people connect and communicate, enabling seamless interaction across geographical boundaries. However, despite these, technological advancements, conventional email systems remain largely inaccessible to individuals with visual impairments due to their heavy reliance on visual interfaces. This limitation has further widened the digital divide, restricting opportunities for effective participation in the online communication space. This project seeks to address this critical challenge by designing and implementing a voice-based email system specifically targeted at the visually challenged, thereby fostering digital inclusivity. The primary objective of this research is to develop an intuitive and user-friendly email client that allows visually impaired users to send, receive, and manage emails without the need for prior training. To achieve this, the system discards the traditional keyboard-based interface in favour of two core modalities: advanced speech-to-text technology for composing messages and simplified mouse-based interactions for navigation. A key feature ofthe system is its cooperative voice feedback mechanism, which provides step-by-step verbal prompts and confirmations throughout the entire process — from reading emails aloud to assisting in composing and sending messages. The system was implemented using Node.js for the backend, React.js for the frontend, and integrated with robust speech recognition and text-to-speech APIs to ensure accuracy and responsiveness. Testing revealed that the application significantly enhances the ability of visually challenged users to operate email functions independently, efficiently, and with minimal learning effort. Beyond serving the visually impaired, the system is equally beneficial to individuals facing literacy or typing challenges, thereby extending its relevance to a wider user base.
