ABSTRACT

The study investigated the role of Safety Management in Aviation Industry. Safety management is commonly understood as applying a set of principles, framework, processes and measures to prevent accidents, injuries and other adverse consensus that may be caused by using a service or a product. The objective of the research were to make assessment of the safety management in Nigeria aviation industry, determine the causes of air accident in Nigeria aviation, determine level of compliance with International Safety Standards, and to determine how to promote safety in aviation industry for sustainability in tourism industry. The population for the study consisted of 5,000. Sample for the study consisted of 370 respondents in Port-Harcourt International Airport and Sam Mbakwe Airport Imo State. Data for this research was generated using qualitative and quantitative techniques. Simple frequency percentages and mean were used to analyze the data generated for the research. The findings of the study includes the following; poor maintenance culture, visibility, poor communication system, poor Air traffic control, poor runway lighting, unqualified personnel and corruption can cause air crash. For tourism industry to be sustained, adequate safety and security must be maintained in aviation industry in order to increase number of people that travel. It was recommended that in order to enable the Nigeria Aviation Industry participate effectively in the International Civil Aviation, the Nigeria Civil Aviation should seek to achieve global optimum safety levels by adhering strictly to International, airline regulations — co-operation in creating safety programmes, consumers on their adoption and full compliance in their implementation.
