ABSTRACT

This study analyses the adoption of renewable energy systems in hotel operations and it's impact on cost efficiency within the hotel industry in Umuahia metropolis, Abia State. The rising cost of energy and the increasing global demand for sustainable practices have made renewable energy a pivotal focus in modern business operations. By examining the current energy consumption patterns, this research identifies the challenges posed by reliance on conventional energy sources and the potential benefits of adopting renewable alternatives such as solar, wind, and biomass energy. A mixed-method approach, combining qualitative interviews with hotel managers and quantitative analysis of energy cost data, was employed to assess the feasibility and economic implications of renewable energy adoption. The population of this study is made up of management of selected registered hotels in Umuahia, Abia State, with a sample size of 70 respondents. The data generated from questionnaire administration were analyzed using frequencies, percentages and mean deviation while the hypotheses were tested using Pearson's product moment correlation. Findings indicate that renewable energy solutions, though requiring significant initial capital investment, offer substantial long-term cost savings and operational efficiency. However, the study also highlights challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited awareness, and policy gaps hindering widespread adoption, especially wind, geothermal and biomass energy. Inferential analysis indicates a strong negative correlation between forms of renewable energy and operational cost. The results showed that as the level of renewable energy ( solar, wind, geothermal and biomass) increases, operational costs decreases. Based on the findings of the research study, the following recommendations were proposed; promote solar adoption, address barriers to wind energy adoption, enhance geothermal energy accessibility, promote biomass energy utilization and enhance general renewable energy adoption . This research underscores the critical need for policy interventions, stakeholder collaboration, and awareness campaigns to facilitate the transition to renewable energy in the hospitality sector. By emphasizing cost efficiency and sustainability, this study provides a blueprint for hoteliers in Umuahia metropolis and beyond to leverage renewable energy as a strategic advantage in an increasingly competitive market.
