ABSTRACT
This study
investigates the influence of green practices on the competitiveness of hotels
in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria. A sample size of 385 respondents was targeted,
with a 96.6% response rate achieved from 372 completed surveys. Analytical
methods, including frequency analysis and multiple regression, were applied to
evaluate the hypotheses using Microsoft Excel 365. Through primary data
collection using structured questionnaires, this research reveals that green
practices, specifically eco-friendly initiatives, renewable energy use, and
socially responsible products enhance hotel competitiveness by aligning with
the growing customer preference for environmental responsibility. Notably,
renewable energy usage emerged as the most significant contributor to
competitiveness. While low-flow water fixtures support environmental goals,
their impact on competitiveness is minimal, likely due to limited visibility
and perceived relevance among guests. The findings suggest strategic
recommendations for hotel managers in Umuahia to enhance competitiveness,
including prioritizing renewable energy, actively promoting ecofriendly
practices, and incorporating socially responsible products that resonate with
eco-aware patrons. This study contributes significantly to knowledge by
providing empirical evidence on the competitiveness impact of green practices
within the Nigerian hospitality context, underscoring the importance of visible
sustainability efforts to attract and retain customers in emerging markets. The
results also highlight how these green practices, particularly renewable energy
use, can serve as a pivotal strategy for sustainable business growth and
competitive positioning in the Nigerian hospitality industry.
