ABSTRACT

This study investigates the relationship between inventory management practices and operational efficiency in food service establishments in Umuahia Metropolis. A structured questionnaire was distributed to 225 respondents, achieving a high response rate of 94.67% (213 fully completed). The data analysis employed descriptive statistics and visualizations, including mean, standard deviation, frequency distributions, and 3D pie charts, alongside multiple regression analysis conducted using Microsoft Excel 365. The findings reveal that Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) significantly enhances operational efficiency by reducing stockouts and improving inventory turnover. First Expired, First Out (FEFO) also positively influences operational efficiency by minimizing waste and spoilage of perishable goods. Conversely, Just in Time (JIT) did not show a significant relationship with operational efficiency, possibly due to demand variability and forecasting challenges in the food service sector. Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) demonstrated a strong positive effect, indicating its effectiveness in balancing ordering and holding costs. The study concludes that implementing robust inventory management practices is crucial for improving operational efficiency in the food service industry. Recommendations include enhancing VMI systems, closely monitoring FEFO practices, tailoring JIT to industry needs, and regularly calculating EOQ for high-turnover items to optimize inventory management and reduce operational costs.
