ABSTRACT
This work
involves design and fabrication of impact of a jet laboratory apparatus for
student’s experiment, to demonstrate on the jetting systems like pelton wheel,
fighting fire, plumping, etc. An impact ofjet apparatus is used to investigate
the reaction force produced by the impact ofjet water on various target vanes.
This work provides detailed performance measurement of an impact ofjet
operation. It addresses the study and determination of the reaction forces
exerted by a jet of water impacting against stationary deflectors and to
compare the experimental result to the theoretical result by the application of
newton laws of motion and momentum impulse force. The deflectors used in this
experiment can be categorized into two geometries, flat vane, and hemispherical
vane. The measurements includes the varied flow rates, the velocity ofwater at
nozzle output and the angles ofthe exit velocities of water from which the
corresponding reaction force are computed. The reaction forces are calculated
both experimentally and theoretically and the results are presented
graphically. The results and properties ofthe graph are used to compare among
the reaction force of each deflectors or vanes. From the result obtained, the
percentage error for flat vanes is 14.62% and that of hemispherical vane is
10.12%. Since the percentage errors are less than 15%, the result on
experimental values of forces for both vanes are accepted. Experimental forces
are lower than the theoretical forces because there exists some discrepancies.
These discrepancies are due to errors and assumptions made while conducting the
experiment.
