ABSTRACT
The
study aimed at assessing the knowledge and intake of vegetables and fruits
among traders in Umuahia South L.G.A. of Abia state Nigeria. This was a
cross-sectional descriptive study where 236 respondents were selected using a
Multistage Sampling technique. Structured questionnaires were used to gather
data on socio-demographic characteristics, fruit and vegetable consumption
pattern of respondents. Anthropometric measurements of weight and height were
collected and used to calculate the body mass index (BMI) of the respondents.
Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version
21. Qualitative data are presented as frequencies and percentages. The study
showed that 35.6% of the respondents were male and 64.4% were female. 30.5%
were between 36-45years with 69.5% married, 98.3% were from Igbo tribe 45.8%
attained secondary education 92.4% practice there trading business at Ubakala.
34.7%, 24.7% and 18.6% indicated banana, watermelon and orange as their
favorite fruit respectively. Cumulative percentage 56.8% have excellent and
good nutrition knowledge. The nutritional status showed 7.6% to be underweight,
58.5% to be normal, 30.5% to be overweight and 3.4% to be obese. The result
showed that fruit consumption of the traders were low as 56.8% indicated the
consumed it only l-2times in a day and 5.1% did not consumed at all. The low
level of appropriate practice offruit and vegetable consumption by traders in
the study area needs to be improved by health workers using the mass media,
health talks and one-on-one health education of patients and clients during
health facility visits.
