ABSTRACT
This study examined the influence of financial motivation on
Local Government employee productivity in Abia State, Nigeria with focus on its
implication for organizational efficiency. Specifically, it assessed the
socio-economic .profile of the employees; ascertained the level financial
motivation among respondents; estimated the relationship between financial
motivation and employee productivity; analyzed the factors that influenced
employee productivity and financial motivation and determined the strategies
that enhanced employee productivity among respondents. The study employed
multistage sampling technique in the selection of location and respondents from
whom data and information were elicited using pretested and structured
questionnaire. In the course of data analysis, descriptive statistics,
correlation analysis, motivation scale and multiple regression were used. The
results of the socio-economic analysis showed that majority of the respondents
were literate, female, married, young, vibrant and enterprising. Majority of
the respondents were full time workers with large household sizes, working in a
conducive environment but were not involved in decision making. The result of
correlation analysis showed that there was a significant positive relationship
between productivity and financial motivation while the multiple regression
model revealed that experience, working hours, decision making, nature of
employment, management style were found to be factors influencing financial
motivation. However, years of working experience, marital status, education and
working environment were significant determinants of productivity. The study
found that poor funding of capacity building activities, lack of feed-backs,
poor networking activities, bureaucratic bottlenecks in the processing of annual
leave and benefits, information gap, poor research and evaluation ICT base were
major constraints to staff productivity. On the basis of the findings, XII the
study suggested that government and the relevant operators of the civil service
should provide the necessary infrastructure, logistics and equipment to provide
the right working environment and conditions for increased efficiency among
others.
