ABSTRACT
This paper has
been prepared as Impact of collective bargaining on the effectiveness of trade
union in Nigeria, a study of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
Trade Unions have often been accused of pursuing their own selfish interests
without due consideration of their role in enhancing organizational
performance. Adequate and detailed exposition on the role trade unions can play
in organizational performance therefore becomes very necessary, thus the main
objectives therefore are to examine trade Unions, Collective Bargaining and
Organizational Performance. Three hypotheses were formulated as guide to the
study. The study adopted descriptive research method and the study relied much
on primary and secondary data. A total of 351 research subjected were drawn for
the targets. Using the stratifies and the sample random sampling techniques.
However 297 copies of questionnaire were returned upon which the data analysis
was based. The data generated were analyzed using chi-square method. The
findings from the study showed that the trade unions have helped to ensure
employee commitment to optimum job productivity os well as effectively using
collective bargaining to enhance organizational performance. The researcher
concludes that collective bargaining is a veritable instrument for improved
employee productivity as well as organizational performance. The researcher
recommends that continuous and adequate awareness should be created among the
stakeholders (Trade Union, management and Government) on their role in not only
developing but sustaining a rancor free work environment which is a
prerequisite for organizational performance.
