ABSTRACT
The demand
for energy is always on the increase in every nation. Infact it's importance
cannot be overemphasized because of it's useful application in the generation of
electricity. Fossil fuels have played a huge part in this course but we cannot
overlook it's negative impact in our environment such as pollution thereby
bringing global warming and greenhouse effect. Having considered this, the
solar tracking device aims to resolve this problem by harnessing and utilizing
solar energy in it's cleanest possible way. This device is designed in such a
way as to track the movement of the sun throughout the day to ensure that
energy from the sun is fully utilized. In order to maximize the conversion from
solar to electrical energy, the solar panels have to be positioned
perpendicular to the sun. Thus the tracking ofthe sun’s location and
positioning ofthe solar panel are important. The goal of this project is to
design an automatic tracking system, which can locate position ofthe sun. The
tracking system will move the solar panel so that it is positioned
perpendicular to the sun for maximum energy conversion at all time.
Photoresistors will be used as sensors in this system. The system will consist
of light sensing system, microcontroller, gear motor system, and a solar panel.
Our system will output up to 40% more energy than solar panels without tracking
systems.
