ABSTRACT

 Costs benefits analysis of Periwinkle cracking machine was carried out in this study, the financial prospects of adopting the mechanized periwinkle cracking machine as a technology for periwinkle processing was analyzed. Standard investment markers such as Payback Period, Accounting Rate of Return (ARR), Net Present Value (NPV) and Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) were evaluated to ascertain the sustainability and level of viability of investment in this technology. Results revealed that an annual initial sum of N126, 526,974.7 is required for start-up while average cash inflow of N I 64,647,667 can be realized yearly. More so, Payback period, Accounting Rate of Return, Net 1 Present Value and Benefit Cost Ratio were determined as 0. 77, 13.01 %,N 1, I 89,205,461 and 2. 75 respectively. This shows that with an expected rate of return of 13.01 %, every WI invested on this technology, will yield N 2.75 and an average of seven to eight months is required for recouping r· investment in this technology. It can therefore be seen that this mechanized Bambara flour processing is profitable and thus recommended for both small scale and large scale periwinkle ! processors.
