ABSTRACT

The study examined a consumption pattern ofsome selected indigenous food for health benefits in two communities in Enugu State, Nigeria. Four research questions were formulated to guide the study. The population of the study was 50,000. Random sampling techniques was used to select 300 respondents for the study. Questionnaire was usedfor data collection which was validated by three lecturers from the Department of Home Economics, MOUAU. Data was collected bypicking randomly. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Thefindings ofthe study include: ofe ukpor, okpa, abacha, achicha ede, awa soup akidi, ukwa were available foods in the communities, the study showed that okpa, abacha, ayaraya and achicha ede were mostly consumed. The study showed that cocoyamprevents cancer, cocoyam helps to reduce symptoms ofrheumatoid also bitter leave relives stomach ache, bitter leafhelps to lower high blood pressure and enhancesfertility. Based on the findings , the study recommended that Awareness should be made to the general public on the health benefitsfor the various indigenous foods.
