ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the market access, value chain and marketing of beef in Abia State, Nigeria. The study examined the socio-economic characteristics of beef marketers, determined the marketing channel for beef, analyzed the factors influencing the market access of the beef marketers and ascertained the relationship between income of beef marketers and value addition. Primary data used in this study was generated through the administration of structured questionnaire to the 100 respondents randomly selected from the beef marketers in Umuahia and Aba. Data collected were analyzed using Descriptive Statistics, Multiple Regression and Pearson Correlation Coefficient. Results from the data showed that majority of the beef marketers are male(91%)with only 9% being female, the study also shoed that 70% of the respondents engage in direct selling , they deal directly with the final consumer and only 14%, 9%, and 8% engage in retail selling, wholesale selling and dual distribution respectively. Results also indicated that beef marketers complained of transportation difficulties, storage facilities, poor access to credit facilities and perishability of beef as the major constraints they faced in their marketing effort. It is therefore recommended that government agencies and their stakeholders should help ameliorate these constraints so as to ensure sustainability of the industry.
