ABSTRACT
This
study seeks to evaluate the effect of manpower training in service
organizations using Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) Umuahia Zone
as a case study. Specifically, the objectives are determine the benefit
ofemployees training in service organization, examine the current training of
employees in an organization and Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC)
Umuahia Zone in particular, ascertain the challenges ofmanpower training in
Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) Umuahia Zone, and establish
appropriate measures for manpower training that can improve organizational
performance.. This study employed a descriptive survey method. The researcher
has chosen the employees of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC)
Umuahia Zone as the study respondents which involved a total of 250 employees
including top andjunior staff. The data collected using the questionnaire was
analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages). The
analysis was represented in tabularformfor easy understanding and it consisted
the number of respondents and the corresponding percentage and Chi — square
andANOVA were used as the statistical tools usedfor testing the stated
hypotheses. From the result ofthe study, it wasfound there is no significant
benefit (X2C = 7.501, X2t- 9.488, p>0.05) ofemployees training in service
organization. Also, there are significant challenges (r2 = 6702..0, f = 6.713,
p = 0.030) of manpower training in Enugu Electricity Distribution Company
(EEDC) Umuahia Zone. The study therefore recommends that organizations should
restructure their training by including administrative courses into it so that
the high cost ofgoing outside for similar courses will be minimized. There
should be free flow ofinformation to enable all the staffaware ofthe training
programme available both internally and externally. The study therefore
concludes that training is necessary among other things to improve quality and
quantity of work, to increase productivity and to induce certain behavioural
changes in the employees. Every organization should therefore try to
incorporate effective and efficient training oftheir employees (manpower) in
order to achieve their aim and objectives with ease.
