ABSTRACT
Transportation provides access to natural resources and
promotes trade, allowing a nation to accumulate wealth and power.
Transportation system and the routes they use have greatly influenced both how
and where people live. Reliable transportation allows a population to expand
throughout a country's territory and to live comfortably in remote areas far
from factories and farms. This research work is concise and generally
summarizes the activities duly carried out in the design and implementation of
an Online Transport Booking' System and Private Charter for River State
Transport Company (RTC) Port Harcourt, River State. The goal of the system is
to providing a web-based bus ticket reservation function where a customer can
buy conunercial/executive vehicle ticket through the online system without a need
to queue up at the counter to purchase a bus ticket. Currently, the type of
system being used at the counter is an internal system which is manually used
in selling the commercial/executive vehicle tickets. Customers have to go to
the counter to buy commercial/executive vehicle ticket or ask for
commercial/executive vehicle schedule and also have to queue up for a long time
in order to secure a commercial/executive vehicle ticket. It would be of great
necessity to design a computerized system that will provide a substitute
channel for transport booking activities to be carried out. The objectives of
the proposed system are to Enabling customers to check the availability and
types of commercial/executive vehicle online, Customer can check the time
departure for every RTC commercial/executive vehicle through the system, Easing
commercial/executive vehicle ticket payment by obtaining a bank pin after
payments is made to the various designated banks, ability of customers to
cancel their reservation and the use of database will help in easy retrieval of
information and control data concurrency. The study outlines the main concepts
of the methodology and analysis of the proposed system, compares it to the
existing and goes further to explain the design and implementation of the
system. The methodologies used are Waterfall model and Object Oriented Analysis
and Design Methodology (OOADM). The fact finding techniques employed is
Interview, observation, online and library research. The proposed system will
be designed using HTML, CSS, PHP and MYSQL as database.
