ABSTRACT

This study examined the use of serials by students of Akanu-Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Library, Uwana. The study adopted the survey research design. A sample size of 422 respondents was randomly drawn from a total population of four thousand, two hundred and fifteen ( 4215), in the five schools of the Polytechnic (business studies, engineering, environmental, sciences, and arts) and the fifteen ( 15) librarians in the school's library. The data collected for the study . was analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as mean, standard deviation, frequency table and charts. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that the size of available relevant serials in the library of Akanu-lbiam Federal Polytechnic Uwana is small. Also, the frequency of use of serials by students of Akanu-Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Library, Uwana is low as the. respondents admitted using the library serials occasionally in a semester while majorly rarely use the library serials. The study equally revealed that library serials are highly accessible by students as the available library serials are openly shelved for users to access and study extensive(y. Also, the major types of serials used by students are academic journals, followed by annual reviews and newsletters. The study recommended that the library should provide adequate, relevant and current serials for students and other library users. Also, the institution, government and private organizations/individuals should support the library with funds or grants for acquiring sufficient serials to the size and quality of the entire coJlection
