ABSTRACT

The study examined the use and users satisfaction of academic library services in Abia State. Five research questions guided the study. The research design for the study is descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprise of 373 respondent made up of 300 level and 400 level undergraduate students of Library and Information Science, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. The sample size for the study is 193 using statistical formular provided by Taro Yamanne. Questionnaire was the major instrument for data collection. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed that only circulation services, serial services, reference services, charging and discharging and photocopying services are offered in the library. Also, that the frequency of use of library services among the students is low. Most importantly, the students are dissatisfied with the library sendees provided in the library. The findings revealed that the challenges affecting the use and user’s satisfaction with the library services offered in Michael Okpara University ofAgriculture, Umudike, library are inadequate reading chairs and carrels, inadequate library facilities, inadequate funding, lack of awareness of library resources and services, inadequate library resources, erratic power supply, low internet bandwidth, inadequate information retrieval skills, together with Lack of web technology skills among staff, and Inadequate library staff. The study recommended that the library should acquire current and upto-date information resources, but print and electronic information resources, the university management should provide necessary ICT infrastructures to enable the library migrate to webbased library' and information services using modem technology and tools, library staffshould be sponsored to both national and international conference, workshops and seminar so as to acquire the relevant skills and competences needed to effectively provide desired library service to users among others.
