ABSTRACT

This study compared the potential of SDS modified and unmodified NZVI adsorbent in removing Naphtol AS from aqueous solutions. The batch-adsorption experiments were performed as a function of pH, temperature, concentration, contact time as well as dynamics of the process. The Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Raduskevich isotherm models for the various adsorption were tested. The coefficients of determination ofthe three models were high, with Langmuir providing best description for adsorption ofthe dye solution onto unmodified and SDS modified NZVI, with the SDS modified NZVI fitting more with a higher R2 value of 0.93. Maximum adsorption capacity corresponding to monolayer coverage (qmax values in mg/g) obtained from Langmuir plots are -0.104123 and -0.053616 respectively for Naphtol AS adsorption onto SDS modified and unmodified NZVI. The adsorption process was highly pHdependent and the results indicate that the optimum pH for adsorption ofNaphtol AS onto SDS modified and Unmodified NZVI occurred at 6.0 and 4.0 respectively having maximum removal efficiencies of 91 % and 88 % respectively. Studies on the effect oftemperature showed that the optimum temperature for adsorption of Naphtol AS onto SDS modified and unmodified NZVI are 50°C and 70° c respectively. Pseudo first-order and second-order and intra-particle diffusivity kinetic models were applied to the experimental data and results showed that the pseudo second-order provided best fit for the experimental data. Kinetic studies also showed that the adsorption transport mechanism was particle-diffusion controlled.
