ABSTRACT This work evaluated "Effect of methanol extract of sphenocentrum jollyanum on serum liver enzymes in wastar albino rats. 20 male rats were used with weight 140- 210kg were completely randomized into five groups offour rat each as follows: The albino rats were grouped. Group A is the normal control group, Group B served as the positive control, Group C served as negative control and was treated with Glibenclamide, Group D and E were treated with 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight of aqueous Diabetes was induced by single intra petoral (I.P) administration of Alloxan monohydrate(130mg/kgbodyweight) used to induce diabetes by intraperitoneil administration. The extracts were given to the animals orally for 14 days. At the end ofthe experimental period, the albino rats from each experimental group were starved for 16 hours and sacrificed by cervical dislocation. A significant (p<0.05) increased in Aspartate transaminase was observed in untreated group (Negative control) and group treated with 400 mg/kg ofextract when compared with normal control. Tire results of the Alanine transaminase in the present study the Alanine transaminase level was significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in treated rats of both standard drug and the extract when compared to negative control group. Administration of the extract at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg (47.70±1.70 and 41.50±1.30) showed significant increased (p < 0.05) in Alkaline phosphatase level alloxan-induced diabetic rats when compared to the post control group treated with standard drug (30.00±1.40).The result showed that ALP activity was significantly increased (P<0.05) This enzyme can protect the liver. The result is potent to antidiabetes. Plant extract are widely used in Middle East and Asian countries as herbal medication for diabetes.
