Anti-Bacterial Properties Of Vernonia Amygdalina And Effect Of The Extract On Haematological Parameters In Normal And Monosodium Glutamate Intoxicated Rat:- Amadi Ruth P

. ABSTRACT The antibacterial activities of bitter leaf (Vernoniaamygdalina) stem and the effect of ethanolic extract on haematological parameters innormal andmonosodiumglutamate 20 male albino rats were investigated for a periodof fourteen (14) days. The rats were divided into five (5) groups. A, B, C, D, and E. The experimental rats A, C and D were administered with 800mg/kg of MSG, the C and D group were treated with 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg of the extracts and B group was administered with 200mg/kg ofthe extract respectively. The E group was given only rat feed and water. Blood sample were collected from the liver and heart after the rats were sacrificed. Antibacterial properties of bitter leaf stern were determined using clinical isolates. It wasfound that thebitter leaf stem has antibacterial properties at higher dose and for haematological parameter MSG has alteration in HB but not on the PCV and RBC level. The result obtained from the effect of the extract on the bacterial when compared with standard drugCiprofloxacin shows a significant ( p< 0.05) difference and for haematological parameters the MSG group showed significant (p< 0.05) increase compared to the normal in HB while in PCV and RBC there was no significant (p> 0.05) difference. The low dose extract showed significant (p< 0.05) increase in HB and a non-significant difference in PCV and RBC level. The high dose extract showed no significant (p> 0.05) in PCV and RBC and a significant(p< 0.05) increase in HB when compared to MSG group. These result suggest that bitter leaf stem has antibacterial properties at minimum inhibitory concentration of 250mg/ml and that the extract has no ameliorative effect in monosodium intoxicated rat.
