Reading Habits Among Students in the Digital Environment: A Study of the Economics Student In Imo State University Owerri :-Emelike Chikezie D
ABSTRACT
The studyfocused on Reading Habits ofStudents
ofEconomics Department of Imo State University, Owerri, in the face of
technological advancement and digitization. It sought to examine the reading
habits among Economics students in Imo State University, Owerri, find out
thepreferred document media students access reading materials, determine the
extent to which students study in a digital environment and ascertain the
effects ofreading habits in a digital environment on academicperformance
ofEconomicsstudents in Imo State University, Owerri. This research was
undertaken, consequent on the dwindling reading habit due to the quest for
computing skills, and the distractive and wrong application of Information and
Communication Technologies (ICTs). A sample of316 was used in this study
through the Purposive Sampling Technique (PST). The instrument for data
collection was a questionnaire. The research revealed that students do not have
good reading habits and those who had, prefer reading electronic content.
Effects ofthis were highlighted and recommendations made to salvage the
standard ofeducation.
