ABSTRACT

This study seeks to examine library services and challenges of acquisition of resources at the Abie, State Library Board, umuahia. The design for the study is a descriptive survey design. The total population of the study is 3l, the instrument for data collection is questionnaire. Data was analyzed using simple descriptive which includes: frequercy distribution, mean, standard deviation. The following findings was made that reference services, lending .\ervices. interlibrary loan services, oirculation services, reservation services. translation services, children services, JCT services, reprographic services ond community information services are the services in Abia State Library Board. That purchase. standing orders, subscriptions, gifts, exchanges. renting and self-generation are method of acquisition in Ahia Stale Library Board and inadequate fund to finance most of the library's programmes, inadequate library hooks and other reading materials, inadequate space in the lihrary to accommodate library resources, inadequate library staff, wrong attitudes of the librarians towards acquisition and absence of acquisition policy are the Challenges facing the acquisition of /ihrary re.wurces in Abia State library board. The researcher made the /hi/owing recommendutiom that current awareness and selective dissemination of information services of the lihrury .,huuld be increased to improve awareness and use of the library resource.\. that Abia State Library Board !Jhould crmsiderjiuure expansion and make creative plans for a conducive reading environment for the library users, that library staff should be adequately trained in order to improve the services they render lo ifs users or cliental that the government should make funding available in Nigeria public libraries and that the management and government .\hould ensure that adequate information materials are made available in Nigeria public libraries.
