ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine library resources and security challenges in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) library. This study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study is 119 staff of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike Library. The sample size for the study is 119.A Likert-four point rating scale were used as data collection instruments. The rating scale was distributed techniques to 119 staff, all was returned and used for analysis. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean scores, frequency and percentage with the use of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The findings revealed Kinds of security challenges that are prevalent in MOUAU library includes Mutilation of Library, Theft, Disasters, to Insect attacks, Vandalism, Lackadaisical Attitude of staff, and Fire Outbreak. It also revealed that the measures that could enhance library security in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) library include Inventory control, Marks of ownership, Accessibility and use , Guarding against mutilation and vandalism, Protecting materials on exhibit, Protecting entrances and exits, Installation of CCTV, There should be Regular stock taking so as to know what is missing the library, There should be regular checking of book pages when returned and Regular lighting system should be provided in the library. The recommendations include: There should be regular patrolling by libraries securities within the library. There should be constant supervision by libraries securities within the library. Surveillance by libraries securities within the library. The library staff should ensure that materials available in the library are prevented from being stolen.
