Librarians' Information Literacy Skills and Service Delivery: A Focus on Danbaba Danfulai Suntai Library, Jalingo:- Juliet Onuoha

ABSTRACT

It is no longer news that the library is seriously competing for survival as a result of information explosion. The only remedy lies in acquiring the required skills and competencies for effective service delivery. To this end, this study investigated the information literacy skills of the librarians and services delivery in Danbaba Danfulani Suntai (DDS) Library, Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo. The descriptive survey design using a sample of12 librarians, comprising oflibrary staffwith university degrees in library and information science, working at the DDS Library, Jalingo was used. A 76- items researcher-made questionnaire titled: “Information Literacy Skills and Service Delivery by Librarians Questionnaire (ILSSDLQJ" was used for data collected. However, data collected was analyzed using mean scores and standard deviation. Findings showed that librarians in the DDS Library have acquired various information literacy skills. It further indicated that reading of books, conference attendance, seminars, online classes, interaction in social media are part of the numerous sources through which the librarians acquire information literacy skills. Additionally, reference services, bibliographic search services amongst others are the services where the librarians apply their information and literacy skills in delivery. It was also reported that these information literacy skills have numerous positive effects on the librarians' service delivery, such as, making librarians tasks easy, bringing about the acquisition ofaccurate and right information resources amidst some challengesfound. Based on thefindings, the study recommended that the government and Management of TSU, Jalingo should intensify efforts in creating further avenues to enable the librarians acquire more information literacy skills, among other things.
