Abstract
Mentorship plays a pivotal role in shaping the
growth and success ofindividuals in various fields and library and information
science (LIS) is no exception. In the dynamic of LIS education and professional
practice, the establishment of strong mentoring relationships is
crucialforfostering knowledge transfer, skill development and career
advancement. This work explores the definitions and history ofmentorship in the
LISfield. It examines the significance ofmentorship visa-vis the various types
ofmentors and mentees in LIS education andprofessional practice. The work
equally assessed various types ofmentorship in LIS and areas ofmentorship in
LIS education and professional practice. Considerable elements for successful
mentoring programme in LIS education and Professional Practice and Challenges
affecting them were also harnessed. The work concluded by stating that
mentorship is a valuable tool in LIS education and professional practice, but
it requires intentional effort and a commitment tofosteringpositive
relationships.
