Abstract
The study
focused on the impact of industrial action on achievement of organizational
goals (a study of ASUU, MOUAU Chapter) in Abia State. The specific objective
sought to achieve in this study include to: determine how industrial action can
significantly aid in achieving union goals, determine the relationship that
exist between industrial action and employees demands from management,
ascertain what causes the union to be involved in industrial action, establish
whether industrial action is the only effective means of achieving union
objectives. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study the study had
a population size of 1029 of academic staff of MOUA U out of which 288 sample
size was achieved through Taro Yamane at 5% error inference and 95% level of
confidence. Instrument used for data collection was primarily questionnaire.
Out of 288 questionnaires that was administered. 222 copies were returned.
while 66 not returned The hypotheses were tested using Chi-square Correlation.
and ANOVA Statistical tools. The findings for hypothesis one indicated that
there is no significant association between industrial action and achieving
union goals, where X 2 c =6.154 < X?t = 9.49,p - value= .188 > a= 0.0S.
Hypothesis two showed a positive relationship between industrial action and
employees demands from management where correlation matrix oj.136 at a
correlation coefficient of 1.000, significant level of 0. 05. The result
indicated that respondents are 95% sure industrial action correlates with
employees demand (increase in workers welfare and income).Nu/1 hypothesis was
rejected whereas alternate hypothesis was accepted. Hypothesis three revealed
that F-value of 857 > .426 p - value > a = 0.05, this suggests that
unsealed dispute between union and government; unsettled dispute between union
and management are significant causes of industrial action by the union.
Hypothesis four showed that since Chi-Square calculated (X?c) 38.590> (X?t)
(critical value) of26.30 where Df= 16,p = .001 at a = 0.05 significant level.
Thus, reject the null hypothesis that industrial action is not the only
effective means, whereas accept the alternate hypothesis o:herwise sruted. n1e
study recommended that an atmosphere of cordiality should exist between the
worker and the management. This will guarantee employees' performance and
effective implementation of government working policies. Again the management
should be responsive, considerate and be ready to understand the plight and
have the love of the workers at heart.
