Abstract
The study focused on the impact of industrial
action on achievement oforganizational goals (a study of ASUU, MOUAU Chapter) in
Abia Slate. The specific objective sought to achieve in this study include to:
determine how industrial action can significantly aid in achieving union goals,
determine the relationship that exist between industrial action and employees
demandsfrom management, ascertain what causes the union to be involved in
industrial action, establish whether industrial action is the only effective
means of achieving union objectives. A descriptive survey design was adopted
for the study the study had a population size of1029 of academic staffofMOUAU
out ofwhich 288 sample size was achieved through Taro Yamane al 5% error
inference and 95% level ofconfidence. Instrument usedfor data collection was
primarily questionnaire. Out of288 questionnaires that was administered, 222
copies were returned, while 66 not returned. The hypotheses were tested using
Chi-square Correlation, and ANOVA Statistical tools. The findingsfor hypothesis
one indicated that there is no significant association between industrial
action and achieving union goals, where X2c = 6.154 < X2t = 9.49,p - value =
.188 > a = 0.05. Hypothesis two showed a positive relationship between
industrial action and employees demandsfrom management where correlation matrix
of. 136 at a correlation coefficient of1.000, significant level of0.05. The
result indicated that respondents are 95% sure industrial action correlates
with employees demand (increase in workers welfare and income).Null hypothesis
was rejected whereas alternate hypothesis was accepted. Hypothesis three
revealed that F-value of.857 > .426 p — value > a — 0.05, this suggests
that unsettled dispute between union and government; unsettled dispute between
union and management are significant causes of industrial action by the union.
Hypothesis four showed that since Chi-Square calculated (X2 c) 38.590> (X2t)
(critical value) of26.30 where Df= 16, p - .001 at a = 0.05 significant level.
Thus, reject the null hypothesis that industrial action is not the only
effective means, whereas accept the alternate hypothesis otherwise stated. The
study recommended that an atmosphere ofcordiality should exist between the
worker and the management. This will guarantee employees’ performance and
effective implementation ofgovernment working policies. Again the managementshould
be responsive, considerate and be ready to understand the plight and have the
love ofthe workers at heart.
