ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the institutional repository in Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The Institutional repository(IR) for library services in the university library covers the extent of use of IR in creating visibility in university libraries, the challenges of LR. and ways of improving LR. in order to curb these challenges in the university libraries. The research design for the study was a descriptive survey. The population of the study was 144 which constituted the number oflibrary staff of different cadres. The study used total enumeration method as the number was found to be manageable. Questionnaire was used for data collection and out of the 144 questionnaire distributed; only 127 (88.2%) copies of the questionnaire were duly filled and returned for data analysis. Frequency percentages, Mean and standard deviation were used in data presentation. The findings revealed that the institutional repository is fully functional but cannot be accessed globally but only by the parent institution, but the challenges that sometimes hinder the actualization of the purpose of I.R: such as, are; poor maintenance ofl.R., lack of policy framework to direct the activities carried out in the I.R and difficulties in generating content and many others. The study recommended the initiation of policy framework, creation of awareness, adequate generation of content, support and encouragement from the institution. sufficient fund, proper maintainance of IR and Availability of ICT infrastructure
