ABSTRACT

The study was carried out on the economics of cassava-processing into garri and fufu in Abia state. Ninety (90) respondents were randomly selected across the agricultural zones of the Abia state. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, cost and return and multiple regression. Findings showed that 35.6% showed that respondents were male and 63.4% were female, 55.6% showed that respondent's lies in the ages between 60-70 years, 89% showed that respondents had formal education. The result showed that total returns from the processing was N182,000 against the total cost of 104, 500 with a net return of77,500. Cassava processing into garri and fufu was found to be profitable irrespective of the production capacity as indicated by the profitability analysis. the multiple regression analysis showed that sales of cassava products (garri and flifu) was significant at I % and directly related to the profit, the total marketing cost of garri and fufu was found to be significant at 1% and inversely related to profit, the total marketing cost of garri and fufu was fund to be significant at 1% and invisibly related to profit. Base on these finding from the study, it was recommended that Government should revive cassava processing and encourage private individual; to go into commercial processing. Extension workers should be empowered to teach the rural producer in commercial production. Government should provide electricity at subsidized rate for producer.
