ABSTRACT

 The industrial age is marked by the advent of modern means of transportation and communication. Unique developments at this stage are the multifarious method of transmitting messages through the rail system, sea-fairing ships, and telegraph e.t.c. With the current information technology revolution raging, better and faster means of communication has since evolved and the computer technology has occupied a pride of place. But, a major failure of the computer is the inability to carry physical goods from one point to another. As such the value of courier services becomes more relevant and important to both personal and business interactions and the development of an automated shipment processing system, as an innovation to enhance their service deliveiy cannot be over emphasized. The system in bid to enhance service delivery will make provision for an electronic tracking system through customers' E-mail address. Through this means, a customer could monitor the state/condition of his goods while on transit in order to make sure they reach their destiiiations in safe condition. Chapter one of this research work introduces the concept of courier services with regards to DHL. The background study of the case study, their services, operational standards e.t.c. Chapter two, the literature review, reveals the concept and evolution of courier services, the international shipment, packaging, transportation, storage e.t.c. Chapter three discusses the research methodology and data collection techniques used for this work and also the analysis of the existing system. Chapter four discussed the system design • of the new system. This comprises the scope of the design, its objectives, the functions of the new system, benefits, system specifications etc. Chapter five discuses the system implementation and system requirements cost. And finally chapter six gives the concluding remarks and recommendation.
