ABSTRACT

Applications of computers in various spheres of life has become of uttermost importance especially in this era of information technology where works are made easier and more efficient as a result of applications of computers in solving real life issues. The topic of this research project is the design and implementation of laboratory management system using New Era Hospital Umuahia, Abia State as a case study. The essence of this study is therefore to design and implement software to take care of management practices in the laboratory session of the hospital. The design process was carried out using visual basic.net programming environment and Microsoft access as the database tool. To aid this work, some investigations and analysis were carried out on both the existing and the prospective systems of laboratory management in the hospital. Both the primary and secondary methods of data collection were adopted in the information gathering stage of this work. Also some statistical tools like the tables, bar chart and the Chi-square (X2) were used in analyzing the collected data and testing the hypothesis raised in the course of this work. At the end of the analysis performed, the problems of the existing system of management in the hospital were properly defined. It became obvious that the laboratory understudy still embarks on a manual system of management which is simply inefficient. Inefficiency from the results of the analysis performed could be effectively managed if the computer based system of management is implemented; hence, the need to design and implement software for the laboratory management. Many literatures on management information systems were also reviewed in this work.
