ABSTRACT
The fusion of biometrics and computing is a fast-paced, exciting field. There is a never ending amount of applications that can and will be created to take advantage of our complex human structure and the incredible quantity of computing power we have created for ourselves today. Identity verification becomes a challenging task when it has to be automated with high accuracy. The existing methods such as passwords and photo identity cards are inadequate to meet such heavy demands. Biometrics-based authentication offers several advantages over other authentication methods: there has been a significant surge in the use of biometrics for user authentication in recent years. It is important that such biometrics-based authentication systems be designed to withstand attacks when employed in security-critical applications, especially in unattended remote applications. An overview of the fast developing and exciting area of automated biometrics is provided in this project. Several popular Biometrics including fingerprint, face, iris are richly described and an introduction to biometrics methods is presented. In this project, I will outline the inherent strengths of biometrics-based authentication, although, for illustration purposes, fingerprint authentication will be used, my analysis extends to other biometrics-based methods. This project is focused on fusing together biology and computing to produce an application that will hopefully develop a new standard in student authentication. The ultimate goal of this project is to create fingerprint security identification and verification system.
