ABSTRACT
The antimicrobial effectiveness of diluted antiseptics and the health risks that may be associated with any surviving pathogens were investigated. This experimental study was conducted using Kirby Bauer’s disk diffusion method of antimicrobial susceptibility test. Dettol, Savlon, Septol, Purit and NCP are five different kinds of antiseptics which have been widely used in common laboratories, hospitals, homes, barbing shops, etc. In this study, a compared experiment on these five antiseptics effectiveness was conducted against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Different concentrations of antiseptics (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%) were used on both organisms. Differences in concentrations tested was because, the original concentrations of the antiseptics differs. After 24 hours of incubation at 37 0C, the results showed that all the antiseptics inhibited the growth of the test organism in their concentrated forms. The diameter of zone of inhibitions were measured by using a ruler in millimeters, using different concentrations, their efficacies varied. The results showed that 60% to 80% Dettol and Savlon had the best and ideal efficiency against both test organisms, while NCP showed least sensitivity. 60% to 80% concentrations gave the highest effect on Staphylococcus aureus as compared with Escherichia coli.
