Determination Of Nitrite Contents Of Borehole Water Samples From World Bank Housing Estate Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria:- Ekwunife, Amaka

ABSTRACT ix The nitrite content/level of water from six (6) different boreholes(A,B,C,D,E,F) located in Umuahia Housing Estate in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria were determined. Water samples were collected from these boreholes and analyzed according to the method described by Montgomery and Dymock (1961) for nitrite determination in drinking water, and evaluated with the World Health Organization Standard (WHOS). Nitrite content of borehole water samples analyzed were below the recommend limits set by World Health Organization for drinking water. The nitrite levels range from 0.0016mg/l - 0.009mg/l being 0.00378mg/l for sample (A), 0.0023mg/l for sample (B), 0.008mg/l for sample (C), 0.0056mg/l for sample (D), 0.009mg/l for sample (E) and 0.0016mg/l for sample (F). These results indicated that the borehole water samples were safe for human consumption with respect to nitrite content and therefore may not pose risk effect associated with nitrite toxicity
