ABSTRACT viii Gastrointestinal parasites is one ofthe widely spread problems in rearing goats in Nigeria due to high rainfall and humidity in this area which favours the growth of these parasites and reduces productivity of goats reared in this region.The study on the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites among goats slaughtered in umuahia were carried out using 40 Intestines of goats; comprising 25 females and 15 males that was examined for helminth infections. Twenty four (96%) ofthe female goats were infected'while ten(66.7%) of male goats were infected.Two class of helminth parasites were identified class Trematoda and class Nematoda.one digenetic trematode Paramphistomum cervi with prevalence of 67% and four nematode — Oesophagostomum columbianum with of 45%, Trichostrongylus colubriformis with a prevalence of 22.5%, Haemonchus contortus 15% and Trichuris ovis with a prevalence of 7.5% where identified in both male and female goais.Paramphistomum cervi had the highest mean intensity of infection; 43.4 in female and 30.7- in male goats respectively, followed by Oesophagostomum columbianum 14.7 in female and 5.8 in male, Trichostrongylus colubriformis showed a mean intensity of 8.0 in female and 6.8 in male, Haemonchus contortzis with mean intensity of infection 9.3 in female and 11.3 in male, Trichuris ovis had a mean intensity of infection 4.0 in female and 4.0 in male.The predilections sites for the respective parasites are ; large intestine for Oesophagostomum columbianum and Trichuris ovis, small intestine for Trichostrongylus colubriformis, rumen for Paramphistomum cervi and abomasums for Haemonchus contortus. Oesophagostomum columbianum and Trichuris ovis did not occur in the same gastrointestinal tract of both gender (male and female) goat
