ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anti-diabetic activity of the

methanolic extract of the leaves o Oxylciiaiifliera abyssiiiica (A&ican

Bamboo) in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Also the effect of the extract on

the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was studied. Induction of diabetes in

the mice was achieved by a single intraperitoneal injection of alloxan

monohydrate (5 mg/kg). Doses of 100, 300 and 500 mg/kg of the extract

were given orally to the diabetic mice by gastric garage alter which blood

collected from the tail snip was used to check their fasting blood sugar

(FBS) levels at 0 hour, 1 hour, 3 hours and 6 hours using Accu-Check Active

auto analyzer ghicomctcr kit. A standard anti-diabetic drug,

_glibenclamicle (dose of 5 mg/kg), was used as l)Ositive control. The OGTT

was evaluated by loading glucose to rats at the close of 2000 mg/kg and

checking their FBS at 0, 1 and 3 hours. In the anti-diabetic study,

glibenclamicle and all the doses of the extract showed significant (p<O.02)

reduction in the PBS of the mice in the 1 St and 3rd hour and a further

significant (p <0.002) reduction in the FBS at the 6th hour. The effect was

dose-dependent. Also, the extract at the dose 200 mg/kg reduced the FBS by

31 % at the 3 hour in the OGTT study. However, the standard drLlg

(glibenclamicle), showed better activity up to the sixth hour in FBS

• reduction. In conclusion, metlianolic leaf extract of 0. abyssinca exhibited

potential anti-diabetic aclivity in alloxan-induced diabetic mice in this study.
