ABSTRACT

 This study was carried out on the Analysis of pig production in Ikwuano L.G.A of Abia State The specific objectives include to examine the socio-economic characteristics of pig farmers, to examine the effect of production inputs on pig production, to identify the constraints / problems faced by pig farmers in lkwuano L.G.A and proffer solution and recommendations based on findings. 25 copies. of the questionnaire were used in eliciting information from ten autonomous communities. Data were generated on socio-economic characteristics such as age, sex, religion, marital status years of experiences etc. as well as input output data. Results showed that 84% of the pig farmers in lkwuano fall within the ages of years which indicates a preponderance of active and energetic population. Low and middle income farmers constituted 76%.. This indicates that expansion may not be affected. 52% of the farmers were married. Furthermore, the result showed that 96% of the farmers had formal education, 88% had children. 94% had other dependents. This high dependence may lead to poor capital formation. Pig farmer having experience of 4 years and. above constituted 72% and location wise. Awomnaebo had 28% pig farmers./ The regression coefficients were positive for number of pig raised and labour indicating a direct relationship with output. The main constraints faced by pig farmers in a decreasing magnitude were inadequate transport facilities (98%) inadequate capital. (84%), feed (68%), inadequate extension services (56%), among others. In order to improve the output of )farmers it was recommended that the transport system should be upgraded cooperatives activities should be encourage. It further recommended that veterinary clinics be established at strategic locations of the L.G.A
