ABSTRACT

The study analyzed the activities of the fisheries co — operative Project in Idima Abam. It considered the organizational structure and factors affecting their performances. The result showed that the chairman and secretary are very prominent in the organizational structure while income, inadequate working materials and poor infrastructure are the highest constraints confronting Fisheries co — operative. They were all analyzed by use of descriptive statistics such as mean, percentages and cross tabulation. Enterprise budget analysis was used to determine the cost and returns of the project which was found to be profitable. T — test was used in coiTiparing the output of the beneficiaries with that of the non — beneficiaries. II was found that there was a significant difference (t cat >t tab) 'due to some of the benefits the members derive from Fisheries Co — operative Membership. From the above findings, appropriate policy recommendations were made. From the study, fishes have been found to be the best and the cheapest protein to be obtained with less fat content. It is easily digestible. In terms of production , it is advisable to engage in co — operative project because of some of the benefits that are derived from it. Most people are still ignorant of the fact that fisheries production 1re the most lucrative arm of agriculture due to the fact that it has less mortality, o I recommend that awareness has to be created either through seminars or teaching methods. Farmers intending to go into fish farming should be encouraged to join fisheries cooperative to enable them last in the business and expand as well.
