An Investigation into the Use of Statistics by Nigerian University Libraries:- Alex Chikezie
Abstract
This study investigated the use
ofstatistics by libraries in Nigerian universities. The population frame was
170 university libraries out ofwhich 40 were sampled using simple random
sampling. Data were collected using questionnaire; only 20 were returned and
found usable. Descriptive statistics in tabular form and percentage, were used
to analyze the data. Findings revealed that university libraries in Nigeria use
statistics but not standardized, not comprehensive and uniformed; recommendations
were made such as training and retraining the library staff onthe use
statistics, inclusion of use of statistics in the LIS curricula, ensuring that
all the library staff are involved in collecting statistics in all areas of
library activities and the statistics collected should be made available to
university management and otherstakeholders.
