ABSTRACT
The quality of academic advising received by a student is
crucial to the overall performance of the student. Good advising yields a good
outcome while bad advising will be frustrating and have a damaging effect on
students' progress, This research work is concise and generally summarizes the
activities duly carried out in the design and implementation of an Intelligent
Course Advising System for undergraduates of Michael Okpara University of
Agriculture, Umudike. The objective of the system is to be able to give advice
to students based on their academic records and performance levels. The number
of students in need of counseling is very enormous and few staff in counseling
cannot handle the job effectively and it is always very easy to forget
information about students. The mode of storage of information observed from
the students in different forms are not reliable, this makes the course
advisors apply guess work in trying to direct students in their course of study
and it is a very big delay in taking decision on students concerning their
future career. It would be of great necessity to provide a computerized system
that will provide a substitute channel for academic activities to be carried
out The automated system will ensure that information about students are
properly managed and also their course that can be registered, The use of
database will help in easy retrieval of information and control data
concurrency. The automated system expected to provide adequate enabling
environment for counseling on student to give them better career perspective
and allow student to post uestion to the advisers and receive answer to their
questions. The study outlines the main concepts of the methodology and analysis
of the proposed system, compares it to the existing and goes further to explain
the design and implementation of the system. The methodologies used are
Waterfall model and Object Oriented Analysis and Design Methodology (OOADM).
The fact finding techniques employed is questiolmaire, observation, online and library
research. The proposed system will be designed using HTML, CSS, PHP and MYSQL
as database.
