A Statistical Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Yield Of Yam And Weather Components (A Case Study Of National' Root Crop Research Institute Umudike)
ABSTRACT
For this project, a secondary
data was collected from the "National Root Crop Research Institute
Umudike" at yam unit for the yield and at metrological unit for the
weather components from the year 1996 to the year 2010. The objective of this
work was to construct a model which can be used to predict the values of the
yield on yam given the values of the weather parameters and the second aim was
to determine whether a significance relationship exists between the dependent
variable and a set of all the independent variables. The method of analysis
used for this work is multiple regression analysis. Multiple and partial
correlation was also introduced. In testing the significance of the model, it
was established at 5% level of significance that there exist a functional
relationship between the yield of Yam and weather components. It was also
established that rainfall, Relative humidity in particular was significant
whereas temperature on its own was insignificant. We can conclude that the
tendency for obtaining a high yield of especially in Umudike do not necessary lie
on individual parameters because each may contribute little or no support in
the yield of yam. In all, the objective of this work was achieved that is,
relationship between the weather components and the yield of yam is
significant.
