The Sub Acute Anti-Diabetic Effect Of Methanolic Extract Of Ficus Glumosa Stem Bark On Alloxan Induced Hyperglycaemic Rats

ABSTRACT
Ficus glumosa Del, commonly called African rock fig, is a large tree
indigenous to southern part of Nigeria, its stem bark has been of interest to
researchers because of its use in the treatment of various disease conditions
in Nigerian traditional medicine. The present study was aimed at evaluating the
sub acute anti- diabetic effect and properties of the methanolic extract of
Ficus glumosa del stem bark, using alloxan induced diabetic rats, the extract, at
the doses of 62.5 mg/Kg, 125 mg/Kg and 250 mg/Kg, showed a remarkable
decrease in blood glucose level in alloxan induced diabetic rats. There was
significant difference between the extract treated groups and the negative
control groups treated with 10 mg/Kg distilled water. At 14 days post treatment,
the blood glucose level for the group treated with Ficus glumosa and
glibenclamide (2 mg/Kg) were lower than the normal blood glucose level of the
negative control.
