The Effects Of Methanol Root Extract Of Sphenocentrumjoll Yanum Ontestosterone, Follicle Stimulating Hormone, Lutenizing Hormone Prolactin Levels And Testicular Size In Male Wistar Albino Rats.:- Lazarus Jane C

ABSTRACT vi Sphenocentrum Jollyanuin (SJ) is a known medicinal plant claimed to have an aphrodisiac property, anti-pyretic effects, anti-microbial, hematinic, anti-oxidant and anti angiogenic effects etc. There is however limited information on its effects on reproductive hormone production, this study was carried out to investigate the effect of the methanolic root extract on reproductive hormones such as testosterone , follicle stimulating hormone(FSH), luteinizing hormone(LH) , prolactin and also testicular size of male albino rats. The animals were grouped into two groups of four rats each serving as the control and the test group. The extract was administered orally at a dosage of 400mg/ kg body weight for 14 days after which the animals were sacrificed and blood collected for hormonal assay. The serum levels of testosterone, FSH, LFI and prolactin where determined using the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. Data from the study were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 95% confidence interval. Results obtained showed that the methanolic root extract of SJ caused a non-significant (P>0.05) decrease in levels of FSH LH and testosterone levels (5.55 + 1.25, 3.08±0.38, 9.49±.63), respectively and a significance (P<0.05) increase in prolactin (41.75±1.32) levels of the test group compared to the control (9.58±1.20, 4.92±1.32, 10.51±3.22) and (36.03±1.86).
