ABSTRACT

File aim of this study is to access the effect of leaf extract of Vernon/a unygcfa/ina (bitter leaf) on castor oil induced diarrhoea in waster albino rats. Thstor oil induced diarrhoea was studied using loperamide (0.006mg/g) as a credence standard in wistar albino rats. The mean number of wet feaces was Intermixed. The result showed that Vernon/a ainygdalina exhibited a dose lependent, significant antidiarrhoeal activity against castor oil induced liarrhoea in wistar albino rats. From the result, the mean weight of faeces for operarnide is 1.10 ± 0.12, for 40mg/bOg is 2.12 ± 0.28, for 20mg/lOOg is 2.45 0.25 and their percentage inhibition are 64.28%, 31.16%, and 20.45% respectively. Hence, the extracts at 40mg/lOOg body weights sibilantly clayed the onset of diarrhoea in 4 hours and reduce the mean weight of faeces to (2.12 ± 0.28) when compared with the negative control group which is (3.08 0.25). the percentage inhibition exhibited by 40mg/lOOg was high at 3 1.16% ihcn compared with positive control group (loperarnide) which was 64.28%. In conclusion, the result of this investigation revealed that 96% ethanol leaf  extract of Vernonia ainygdalina contains pharmacologically active substance(s) anti-diarrhoeal efficacy.
