ABSTRACT xi Differential white blood cells are the cells of the immune system which are synthesized in the bone marrow by a process called haematopoiesis and their concentration greatly affect the immune system and response to pathogen invasion by antibodies. They include; neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils and lymphocytes. This study evaluated the effect ofquail egg on the concentration ofthe differential white blood cells. 20 adult male albino rats were randomized and grouped into 4 groups of which the first group was the normal control. Three different volumes ofthe quail egg (0.3ml, 0.6ml and 0.9ml) were administered to the test groups daily for 21 days. The results obtained verified the fact that there was a significant impact of the quail egg on the concentration ofthe differential white blood cells with significant decrease (P>0.05) for neutrophils, monocytes and eosinophils and no significant effect on the concentration of basophils while there was a significant increase (P<0.05) in the concentration of lymphocytes when compared with the control group with mean ± sem. This result provides an indication to the fact that quail egg may be a natural and potential way of impacting the concentration ofthe cells ofthe immune system (differential white blood cells) and immune response in general.
